Lily Gordon is a junior at Berkeley High School, where she is enrolled in the International Baccalaureate Program, and a graduate of Prospect Sierra School in El Cerrito. Inspired by family trips to Tanzania, Ms. Gordon began raising money for Nyamagongo, a village in rural Tanzania, when she was only 10 years old. At that time, she met Christine Chacha, a social sciences teacher at Middle College High School in San Pablo, who’d been raised in Nyamagongo and who’d founded a non-profit organization called the African Immigrants Social and Cultural Services. Ms. Gordon traveled with Ms. Chacha to Tanzania three times and, in the Summer of 2008, she built a brick oven in Nyamagongo with the Ujamaa Women’s Group. Today the brick oven provides income for the women and free bread for local orphans and elderly people. Ms. Gordon will return to Nyamagongo for the fourth time this Summer, when she plans to work with the Women’s Group on another project planting trees and various crops.
